The MDPI photonics prize was awarded to Azzura Bigioli from University Paris VII for her work on "Antenna-coupled arrays and single patch detector at 9µm" highlighting a new class single-pixel sub-wavelength detectors with high responsivity ideal for coherent detection in the mid-infrared range.

[*IQCLSW poster prize 1*]
The first IQCLSW poster prize was awarded to Martin Kainz from the Technical University of Vienna for his work on "LO-phonon engineering for high temperature terahertz quantum cascade lasers" showing the importance of the LO-phonon depopulation process for THz QCLs, enabling the specific engineering for high operating temperatures.

The Gala Diner will take place at 8pm at the restaurant La Presqu'Ile, at the tip of a peninsula between Cassis and its famous Calanques, and with a magnificent view of the sea. The restaurant 'la Presqu'île' honours these idyllic surroundings by proposing its inventive cooking, with the flavours of Provence and the Mediterranean.

Transport via the tourist train is provided from the centre of Cassis (depart of 7.15pm next to port - see below map), as well as the return trip.

We are very glad to serve as Guest Editors of this Special Issue to be published in Photonics (ISSN 2304-6732, http://www.mdpi.com/journal/photonics) that will contain a selection of papers submitted and accepted at IQCLSW 2018. Its main scope is to provide a timely and broad collection of the most innovative topics discussed at the latest edition of the school and workshop related to mid-infrared and THz photonics and optoelectronics. Submissions will be divided into Invited and Contributed papers, and are open to all participants. We warmly invite researchers to submit their contributions to this Special Issue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Theory and design of quantum cascade lasers
• New breakthroughs in quantum cascade laser performance
• Novel and new material systems
• Nonlinear effects in quantum cascade lasers
• Broadband gain media design and growth

[**Cassis*]

Cassis (French pronunciation: [kasi]) is a commune situated east of Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southern France.

It is a popular tourist destination, famous for its cliffs (falaises) and the sheltered inlets called calanques. The wines of Cassis are white and rosé. The town is situated on the Mediterranean coast, about 20 kilometres east of Marseille. Cap Canaille 394 metres, between Cassis and La Ciotat ("the civitas") is one of the highest maritime bluffs in Europe, a sailor's landmark for millennia. One of its main beach, called "Bestouan" is made cooler by a karstic source.

[**Getting to Cassis*]

Cassis is easily reached through various transport options. The closest and most convenient international airport is MARSEILLE PROVENCE AIRPORT. Further details on how to reach Cassis and its town centre are described in detail at :

To summarise in three steps from the airport:

1) Airport to Marseille Train Station. From the airport take the shuttle bus to Marseille train station (Marseille Saint Charles). This costs 8.30 euros (one way) or 13.40 euros return, and takes typically 25 mins. (There is also a train service but not as regular as the bus). The departure times and plan are shown below:

2) Marseille to Cassis. From Marseille train station take the regional (TER) train to Cassis that runs every 30 minutes for a journey time of 25 mins. This costs 6.30 euros. Timetables can be found at

The shttule bus from the airport arrives at the west end of the station. It is necessary to pass right through the station concourse (past the various shops, McDonalds etc) to the eastern end where TER tickets can be bought from machines.

(The english version of this website does not give the option to leave from Marseille St. Charles but only from Marseille Blancarde. However, the trains do indeed leave from Marseille St. Charles 5 mins before Blancarde).

3) From Cassis train station to Cassis centre, although walkable, a local bus goes to the centre (last stop 'Casino'). This costs 1 euros. The timetable is shown below:

The workshop will be held at “DOMAINE DE LA DONA”, 3km from the centre of Cassis. Although walkable, transport through a dedicated mini-bus will be provided each morning and evening to and from the centre (depart – at the top of “Rue de l'Arène”, at the roundabout next to Casino Barrière). For depature times please check the programme.

The Domaine de la Dona is a Vineyard and special event location. It is a personal project of Jean TIGANA, a former French international footballer who played in midfield and managed professional football extensively throughout France, including 52 appearances for the France national football team during the 1980s. Passionate about wine, Mr. TIGANA made the acquisition of more than 10 hectares of vineyards at the foot of the Crown of Charlemagne, and produces PDO Cassis wines in white and pink certified organic farming. As well as an event venue the Dona Tigana estate offers wines of character combining tradition and modernity.

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are unipolar optoelectronic devices that exploit optical transitions between engineered electronic subbands created in semiconductor quantum wells. Now 20 years from their first experimental realization, QCLs have proven to provide outstanding performance across the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) spectral ranges. The QCL has already been commercialized by a number of companies, and is a core photonic component in a variety of applications such as: environmental and security sensing; telecommunications; and metrology. The QCL is also an exciting vehicle for the pursuit of fundamental blue sky research, including coherent control in condensed matter systems and developing quantum technologies.

IQCLSW 2018 will be the eighth conference in this successful series. It will be divided into a school (2 days) and workshop (2-3 days) environment. It will bring together leading international researchers in the field of QCLs, both established and early career, and the programme will consist of a series of presentations spanning all aspects of QCLs, from fundamental physics to the exploitation and applications of this technology. The conference will also evolve with new subjects related to interband cascade lasers (ICLs) and new developments in detector technology

The workshop will cover device design, modeling, characterization and testing, as well as the basics of laser/detector transport and optical confinement. Applications, such as high-resolution spectroscopy, chemical sensing for a variety of diagnostic uses, coherent detection, and imaging will also be discussed. Key features of the workshop will be international participation, connection to applications, as well as an educational tilt for PhD students.

Previous meetings, listed below, have been successfully attended with typically 150 participants. IQCLSW 2018 will continue this important event, presenting the recent advances in the domain of QCLs and related phenomena.
